The Check

Five things to check before your next meet

Press the middle, hard
Push down with both hands in the center of the landing zone and lean your weight in. You're feeling for how far it gives before it stops. A healthy pit compresses and pushes back. A failing one keeps going, then hits something firm underneath.
→ If you can feel the bottom, an athlete lands on it too.

Compare the middle to the edges
Press near a corner, then dead center. The middle takes every landing, so it goes first. If the center feels noticeably softer or deader than the outside, the core is compressing unevenly — the pit is aging out even if nothing is torn.

Open it up and look inside
Unzip a section and check the foam itself. Look for crumbling edges, sections that flattened and stayed flat, and any sign of moisture or rodent damage. Water and pests are what turn a decade-long pit into a four-year one.

Run your hand along every seam and zipper
Seams and closures fail before the body of a pit does. Check for split stitching, separating seams, and zippers that have corroded or won't run clean. A pit that opens at a seam mid-season is a pit you're not using.

Check the pieces around the pit
Pole vault especially: the box collar, front bumpers and standard base pads are required equipment, not accessories. A cracked collar or missing bumper can cost you at inspection even when the landing pit itself is sound.
What to do with what you found

Seams, a cover, a top pad or a collar? That's a repair — fix it, don't replace the pit. If the center bottoms out or the foam has compressed and stayed compressed, no cover fixes that.
