Replace the Whole System If:
- The foam core has compressed below 20" of effective depth — athletes are landing on what is effectively a mat with minimal cushion
- The casing fabric shows UV cracking, tearing, or water intrusion that has reached the foam core
- Seam failures are widespread — if more than 2–3 seams have failed, the structural integrity of the whole system is compromised
- The pit is more than 10–15 years old — even if it "looks okay," foam loses density and resilience gradually; a pit that looks passable can fail a safety test
Consider Replacement Parts If:
- Only the top pad is worn — top pads take spike abuse and typically wear faster than the base; replacing the top pad alone can add years to a good base
- A single base section has failed — if the rest of the system is sound, a single-section replacement can restore compliance
- The weather cover is damaged — a failed weather cover can accelerate foam deterioration, but cover replacement is far cheaper than pit replacement
